FX Harsono

FX HARSONO (b. 1949, Blitar) is a visual artist whose work explores national identity, particularly in relation to ethnic minorities. He has been a central figure in Indonesian contemporary art for over five decades.

He studied painting at STSRI ASRI in Yogyakarta and the Jakarta Art Institute. An engaged citizen since his student days, in 1975 he became a founding member of Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru (New Art Movement), which rejected elitist notions of art and introduced experimental and conceptual approaches that critically engaged with political and social issues through installation, everyday objects, and public performance.

Although dissent was dangerous, Harsono’s work remained critical throughout Suharto’s authoritarian regime (1967–1998). When demands for reform led to Suharto’s downfall but also unleashed renewed violence against the Chinese minority, Harsono shifted his artistic investigations towards his own biography, family history, and the unspoken histories of Chinese Indonesian communities.

His work has been exhibited widely across Asia, Europe, and the United States, including at the Singapore Art Museum, Asia Society in New York, and Midnight Moment in Times Square (2018). In recognition of his contributions he received the Prince Claus Award in 2014 and the Anugerah Adhikarya Rupa (Indonesian Art Award). In 2015, he received the Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art, jointly presented by Art Stage Singapore and the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.
