Nathalie Muchamad

Nathalie Muchamad is a French overseas visual artist from Kanaky /New Caledonia, based in Mayotte. She sees the ocean as both a territory and an intellectual space to examine geography, history, and climate within the context of the Plantationocene. Her work appropriates colonial motifs and archives to explore trade, commodities, and tropical technologies within contemporary decolonial approaches to knowledge.

Her research and workshop series during her 2026 Jan van Eyck residency, reveals how the quest for spices birthed the stock market, drove colonization, and shaped the financial-ecological risks behind today's climate crisis.
