Rani Jambak is a composer, sound artist, field recordist, instrument designer, and vocalist of Minangkabau descent. Her practice is deeply rooted in exploring electronic music and soundscapes drawn from diverse regions across Indonesia. Through an extensive body of work, she investigates themes of nature, socio-cultural dynamics, and the intricate ties between human experience and ancestral heritage.
Her artistic journey is a profound exploration of cultural identity as a Minangkabau individual, delving into the philosophical dimensions of tradition and examining how ancestral wisdom can respond to the challenges of modernity. Central to her vision is the concept of #FUTUREANCESTOR, which reimagines spiritual values as vital resources for contemporary life.
In recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to sound, music, and technology, Rani was awarded The Oram Awards in 2022. She is currently a PhD researcher on the NWO-funded project Restituting, Reconnecting, Reimagining Sound Heritage (Re:Sound).
